EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
