A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
